KeymasterImage Comics REFUSES to Recognize Union! Comics Twitter TURNS on Image!
Image Comics refuses to voluntarily recognize the Comic Book Workers Union, pulling in the National Labor Relations Board for a vote. Comics Twitter, of course, turns on the Portland-based comic book publisher.
hey guys welcome back to clownfish tvthis is neon and we’re going to do anupdate on that imagecomicsunionit looks like image comics is not goingto voluntarily recognizethe workers new union according togizmodo according to twitter twitter isvery very upset we’re going to talkabout that before we get into it anyfurther please subscribe for more popculture news views man skies over 239000 substhank you so much for the support we dotalk about comics we talk about thecomic book industry having worked in thecomic book industry ourselves and youcan also go out toshopclownfish.com and pick up a copy ofshadowbindersself-publish that comic uh anyway we’vebeen covering the drama around theproposed union that images uh officeworkers not creativesnot creatives images uh nine or tenoffice workers want to form a union ofcourse uh you know twitter loves theidea of them forming a union twitter islike you know stick it to the manyou know stand up for your rights and itis again the office staff and not thecreatives people don’t seem tounderstand that an image we did a videoyesterday talking about seeminglywas not going to recognize this unionthey put a statement out saying webasically treat you all fairly what isthe deal and now they’ve releasedanother statement kind of doubling downon that that they’re not going tovoluntarily recognize this new unionthat they’re going to have to vote on itumyou know and twitter is uh losing its[ __ ] they’re turning on image comicsthey are this is a this is a publisherthat is currently based in portlandgod i bet they wish they never moved toportland this is what you get for movingthe portland imageuh anyway let’s talk about this gizmodoimage comics is refusing to voluntarilyrecognize as workers new unionimage comics won the former union theworkers the office staff not thecreatives the office staffbut the publisher isn’t going tovoluntarily recognize themearlier in the week the workers of imagecomics office staff not creativesannounced the formation of the comicbook workers united a unionized effortto push for a number of significantchanges in the workplace related equityaccessibility and transparency in thecompany well that’s part of ita big part of why they want to unionizeis the same reason that a lot of peoplewant to unionize over kickstarter theywanted the abilityto veto any problematic creatorscancel any problem at creators cancelany problematic books according to theunion they want the ability to be ableto dictate the content now if they’dsaid hey we want this this and thiswithout throwing that part inyou know they might have gotten a littlemore sympathy from from people likemyself but the fact of the matter isthat like kickstarter they’re sneakingin thedesire the demand to be able to controlthe company’s content and as theantithesisof everything that image comics wasaboutthe image guys left to be able topublish whatever the hell they want topublish they have complete editorialcontrol and complete financial controlover their creationsyou know bringing people in a bunch of25 year old editorial assistants in tomicromanage what you can and can’tpublish who you can and can’t hireisn’t going to go very well it’s notgoing to sit very well with i don’tthink with guys like todd mcfarlane whohave made a career out of telling peopleto sit and spinimage was initially reluctant to commenton the cbthe seabooze formation and whether itwould recognize the union as the companysubsequently said in a statement it hasalways believed in the fair andequitable treatment of staff and hasalways strived to support employees tothe best of its ability yeah in thatstatement i took it to mean like guyswhat the hell what the hell we’ve alwaysbeen fair what the hell the moststraightforward and immediate step imagecould take to support its employees andtheir decision to become union shopwould be to simply acknowledge the unionstart communicating in good faith with abargaining committee instead thoughimage has opted to bring the nationallabor relations board in as a thirdparty this happened that one of thecompanies i worked for too and actuallythe owner of the company got so fed upwith the situation he sold the companyand they fired a bunch of the employeesthat were attempting to unionize andthey went in a totally differentdirection anyway a statement providedthe motherboard image explained that itwould like to hold a secret ballot voteoverseen by the nlrb to determinewhether the communications workers ofamerica union should represent them thisis the same peoplethat have pushed for unions at differentblogsandyou know earlier this week thecommunication workers of america fileda representation petition with the nlrbasking to hold the secret ballotelection so the eligible members of theimage comics office staff can determineif they want the cwa to represent themand their employment with image imagesaid the nlrb is currently reviewingthat petition to determine when thatelection will be held where it will takeplace and who can vote my 909 spoke withthe cbwearlier this week via email about thepush to organize that said the image hadnot been in direct contact aboutvoluntary recognitionthey hoped however the image would comearound and seeing things from theirperspectivewe’re asking image to voluntarilyrecognize our union uh they’re not goingto do that and uh you know again i thinka lot of it it’s not even theuh demands as far as you know fair hoursand fair pay and that sort of thing ithink it was the fact that they snuck inat the very end of their list of demandsthe uh ability to be able to veto anycreator in any project that they vote onbut the employees should not the officestaff should not be able to steer theshipyou know and this is happening at uhspotify this is happening at uh you knownetflix where the employees think theyhave the right to dictatethe contentof you know and it’s like look no youdon’t you don’t like the content youdon’t like the kind of content beingproduced go someplace elsegod knows there are plenty of jobs outthere so twitteris losing its [ __ ] they put thestatement outrightand uh twitter is absolutely losing it[ __ ] they’re actuallyactively hoping for image comics to failat this point and they misunderstandwhat image was about by the way andpersonal opinion uh actually it’s not anopinion it’s fact fact they’re they theyfundamentally misunderstand what theoriginal image founders were aboutthey’re about creative control uh owningyour [ __ ] and getting paid fairly forthings you created these office stafferscreated nothingnothing i’m not saying they shouldn’t betreated fairly not saying they don’twork hard or whateverbut uh they’re not creatinganything so here we have some of thesetweets we got experiment to tell imagecomics to recognize the union ufadufaone of the reasons i love image isbecause of what they stand for which isbreaking the cycle being a leader forchange the statement uh is them kind oftiptoeing around the issue now they’renot tiptoeing around ituhlaughing yeah of courseof course the hypocrisy remembering thereason image comics was made no imagecomics was made so creatorsdidn’t have to kowtow to office staff infact i remember an interview with robliefeld where he was very angry that youknow these 20-somethings were tellinghim what to do and he was like20-something himself but he was makingthe company money and they were tellinghim what to do and he was like no andyou know they weren’t getting a whatthey believed to be a fair share ofthe prophets from you know the themarvel comicsyou know so it was it was it was a greedbased move really it wasn’t about thembeinguh poorly treated it was about themfeeling that they were underpaid for thenumber of comics that they were sellingand not liking editorial oversightthat’s how image got startedi was there man i was there i read allthose those wizard interviews uh benjithe company was founded and the valuesof supporting creators recognized theunion these people are not the creatorsthey’re office staff i’m sorry there isa differencenot saying they’re not workingbut they’re not creatorssad to see image a company build onrevolutionizing the industry won’t dotheir part to keep that going foremployees the irony of the way thiscompany was founded and then all theseyears later the founders won’t recognizethe union what a jokenot even image comics will do theclearly moral thing in card check theentire company was founded in protest ofunfair working conditions at marvelreally shameful nothey wanted more money and they didn’twant editorial interference they wanteda bigger piece of the pie they wanted toit wasn’t that they were necessarilybeing treated unfairly they just wantedto own their [ __ ]that’s what happened that’s whathappened stop rewriting history that’swhat happened uh to be clear a union ofnon-creatives office staff yes larry yeslarrynot people that write draw create comicsnon-creatives that want the ability tocancel titles over accusations and theability to reinstate the title ifmeaningful who gets to decide thatreparations are madeyeah i agree uh veto image is about togo out of business lol i think they willif they approve the union and they’llfind athey’ll find a way to get rid of thoseworkers they’ll reorganize or somethinggoodbye image i hope idw follows suitfor the workersuh joey esposito i love image but youthink a company founded by creators whowant a better workplace would beunquestionably down for giving theiremployees a better workplaceit’s 100 within your power to recognizethe union without using the nlrb as amediator do it yeah this is cowardly[ __ ] recognize the unionuh yes please kneel to these low talentpsychopaths and drive this patheticcompany into the grounduh make it clear what gatekeeping scumyou are um i don’t see this i don’t seethis going very well predictablecowardicedisappointing and unsurprisingimage comics not giving in to the wokemob they’re consulting their goodfriends joe rogan and aaron rodgersbefore deciding anythingrecognize the unionwe literally are interested in anythingelse as your readers we recognize youand you absolute piece of garbagebestie please don’t be the bad guy hereuh perch who is very familiar with thecomic book retail spacea lot of hell yeah let’s go from peoplewho have not fully digested this willcover 12 one dozen people that’s morethan i thought actually zero creativesfreelancers and misunderstand how imagecomics are actually produced yes imagecomics is not a comic book factory it isa number of independent creators andindependent studios that turn in more orless completed comic booksthat get released under the banner it’sa bunch of little separate littlecompanies under one umbrella it’s kindof like a co-op like a market co-op ifyou’ve ever been one of those where youhave several vendors under one roofit seems like it’s one store but it’sactually multiple people kind of runningtheir own [ __ ] under one roof that’skind of what image comics does it’s notlike marvel or dc and the thing is ifimage goes for this then workers atmarvel and dc will demand it as well andi can tell youwhere they are at with disney warnerright now it ain’t gonna happen likethey’ll they’ll freakingshut the company down and be like yeahwe’re gonna outsource all of our comicsfrom now on to some other country that’snot gonna pull this [ __ ] because yourcomics aren’t making enough to make itworth our timeinteresting compared to the responsefrom uh paizowhere paizo voluntarily recognized theunion bypassing the need for a vote wellgood for paizo i guess recognize the[ __ ] unionyou know what has amazing positivelong-term benefits recognizing thedignity and value of work providing astable equitable work environment thatpays a living wage and has clearlydefined roles and standards you knowwhat makes that possible unionsyou know what makes it possible forimage comics to stay in businesscreatives you know who who who is beingleft out in the cold this whole thingthat the creatives actually bring themoney to the company i’m just justsayingsupport the union image it’s the rightthing to dojust recognize the unionah boyi don’t know man yeah it’s not gonnawork it’s not gonna workum am i the only one who keeps readingthese statements from image and gettinghella concerned they’re about to gofull-on evil empireuh image wasthe purest representation of capitalismback in the day theythey cashed in on the greedof the speculator marketin the early 1990sguys like todd mcfarlane rob liefeldyou know even jim valentino even jim leethey wanted their fair share of the piecomics were selling big big numbers alot of money was being made they wantedthey wanted it they wanted their theirfair sharevery capitalist companyand then they moved to portland i don’tknow what the hell happenedanyway i’m gonna wrap this one up
